Position Description:

The Town of The Blue Mountains is a growing and progressive, four-season community with stunning natural features, including the Niagara Escarpment, Beaver Valley and the Georgian Bay shoreline, and the various recreational activities and experiences they afford. We are seeking to fill a Building Co-op Student in our Planning & Development Services Department for a 4 or 8 month co-op term.

Position Overview:

Performs a variety of technical, paraprofessional, and clerical duties and is responsible for assisting the Building Services Division in the acceptance and review of building permit applications (i.e. small additions, alterations, decks, and accessory buildings) to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code, the Zoning By-law and other applicable law.  Assist in: the entry, processing and review of permit applications; the organizing and updating of dormant files, scanning and archiving drawings; research and survey projects; and creating and updating permit checklist and permit guides.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  •  Currently enrolled in full-time studies in an Architectural Technology, Building Science, Civil Engineering Technology or other related discipline at community college or university; and returning to full-time studies or recent grad
  • Working towards obtaining the required qualifications within the required timeframes under the OBOA Internship Program
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills;
  • Ability to deal in a responsible manner with members of the public;
  • Possess superior time management skills in order to meet tight deadlines;
  • Exhibit a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel;
  • Be self-motivated individuals capable of working in both a team environment and on an independent basis;
  • Knowledge of the Town of The Blue Mountains would be considered an asset.

We are seeking to fill a Building Inspector within our Planning and Development Department, Building Services Division.

Position Overview:

Under the general supervision of the Manager Building Services/Chief Building Official, this position plays an integral role in ensuring that the construction, renovation, change of use and demolition activities of buildings within the Town are properly examined and inspected prior to and during construction to provide and maintain a level of quality that complies with the Ontario Building Code, applicable municipal by-laws and applicable law in order to protect public the health and safety ensuring efficient construction within the Town.  The Building Inspector performs plans review and inspection services to ensure compliance with the Building Code Act, Ontario Building Code, and other applicable law consistent with established policies, practices and procedures as directed by the Chief Building Official and issues notices and orders with respect to Building Code Act enforcement, as necessary to ensure life safety and structural integrity of buildings.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Requires a three-year post-secondary Degree and/or Diploma in Architecture or Engineering Technology, or equivalent
  • Requires certification and registration as a Certified Building Code Official with the Ontario Building Officials Association and Civil Engineering Technician or Technologist with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists, or approved equivalent
  • Requires a minimum of three years of Ontario Building Code inspection/plans examination experience; or related work experience
  • Requires maintaining the following categories of qualifications under the building code: Powers and Duties of CBO, House, Small Buildings, Plumbing House, Plumbing - All Buildings, On-Site Sewage, HVAC House, Building Services and Building Structural
  • Extensive knowledge of the Ontario Building Code Act and Regulations and Property Standards By-Law an applicable Federal and Provincial Laws.

Position Overview:

Under the direction of the Town Clerk, the Municipal Election Clerk participates in the preparation, development, implementation, and delivery of the 2018 Municipal Election in the Town of The Blue Mountains. As an employee of the Town, the Municipal Election Clerk must be non-partisan, i.e., they cannot have any political affiliation or bias.

The Municipal Election Clerk supports the Clerks Department by providing coordination and implementation of electoral events. The Municipal Election Clerk ensures that appropriate data is tracked and disseminated in support of the planning, preparation, and delivery of the 2018 Municipal Election in the Town of The Blue Mountains. The Election Clerk is also responsible for acting as a backup for election activities in the absence of the Clerk and the Deputy Clerk.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Minimum high school graduation.
  • Previous experience working in an administrative role in a team environment required.
  • Previous experience dealing with matters that require strict confidentiality required.
  • Previous election experience preferred.
  • Good literacy skills (reading, writing and comprehension)
  • Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to exercise impartiality
  • Knowledge of the AODA and the ability to serve voters with visible and non-visible disabilities.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks.
  • Good analytical skills.
