Position Description:

We are seeking to fill a contract Seasonal Parks & Trails Operator position within our Community Services Department. Position Overview:                                                                  

Reporting to the Manager of Parks and Trails the Seasonal Parks & Trails Operator is responsible for day-to-day outdoor maintenance and ensuring that the parks, trails and grounds amenities of the Town are well kept, including Town Hall and its grounds. Duties include operating a variety of heavy and light powered equipment such as tractor with attachments, riding lawn mowers, chain saws and hand tools necessary in performing general landscaping and maintenance of all municipal park sites, cemeteries, municipal walkway system and various municipal institutional sites.  Specific tasks include cutting grass, raking grass, chainsaw operation, repairing lands, planting, watering and providing care for nursery stock opening and securing buildings and general manual labour. Maintenance of and responsibility for equipment and assets of the Division.  This includes required documentation of logs and Division records and policy inspections of trails, municipal properties and playground equipment. Assist with training and leadership of seasonal summer students.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum high school graduation
  • Diploma in Horticulture or related fields is considered an asset.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a parks/team environment
  • Horticultural, arborist, sports field, irrigation, landscaping & municipal experience are all assets
  • Experience operating and maintaining equipment
  • Be physically fit and able to lift up to 60 lb
  • Ability to work shifts, including nights, weekends and statutory holidays as per schedule and in inclement weather
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license
  • You are knowledgeable of the operation and maintenance of powered equipment such as lawnmowers, chainsaws and small hand tools
  • You have knowledge of and the ability to apply and interpret relevant regulations, acts, policies and procedures (i.e Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, etc.)
  • CPR and First Aid Training is an asset
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, follow and carry out instructions
  • You possess proven communication skills to respond to general information requests from internal and external clients

Reporting to the Manager of Solid Waste and Special Projects the Solid Waste Summer Student will effectively and efficiently assist with operational and maintenance duties for the Solid Waste Disposal Site. This position will also assist the division manager with research and new program implementation. Duties will include assisting with general maintenance and care of the Disposal Site’s operations which includes composting, depot recycling, electronic and hazardous waste and landfilling of municipal solid waste. To assist the Site patrons and public with way finding on the Site and respectfully conveying the Site waste sorting rules. To inspect waste loads and assisting patrons with classifying waste. Communicate to patrons in an effective and courteous manner Site and Division programs, policies and procedures. Specific tasks will include: litter collection, household hazardous waste sorting, cleaning of shop and yard, assistance with record keeping and sampling and other Town duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum one year work experience in a team environment
  • Currently enrolled in a postsecondary institution in a related field
  • Aptitude in machinery and vehicle operation and maintenance
  • Ability to foster good working and interpersonal communications

Reporting to the Lead Hand Harbour/Cemeteries/Building Maintenance, the Harbour Summer Student is responsible for providing excellent customer service, as well as efficiently assist with operational and maintenance duties at the Harbour facility. Duties include cleaning washrooms, changing garbage’s, assisting with docking and  securing vessels to the dock; aiding vessels in departure from slip or fuel dock, fueling vessels, and using pump out system to discharge waste from a vessel to the Town’s waste system; collecting proper fees from transient boaters, daily launch boaters, fuel and pump out sales; monitoring that all vessels are secured in a proper manner to eliminate damage to the boats or docks.
