Our Integrated Community Sustainability Plan

Our Integrated Community Sustainability Plan

The Sustainable Path

The Sustainable Path is an overarching, long-term development strategy that provides a path towards a 'sustainable community'. It is a planning document that outlines the objectives, goals and actions of the next 50 years for different facets of our community.

This plan is unique in that it considers and incorporates ALL o f the components that make our community vibrant- well paying jobs, a lively arts culture, a clean and healthy natural environment and a network of robust social programs.
The Sustainable Path was developed in collaboration with over one-hundred Community Partners within the community and the greater region.  The Town is responsible for facilitating this process by encouraging stakeholder participation and fostering an environment for discussion and dialogue.

The plan has three core focus areas, the pillars of sustainability:
• Environment & Ecological Integrity
• Community Vibrancy
• Economic Prosperity

The Sustainable Path outlines an ideal future vision of the community and includes goals, strategies and actions that when implemented, will lead The Blue Mountains towards a sustainable future.  The vision states:

In 2060, The Blue Mountains is an international showcase for rural sustainability. We are connected and caring Community that blends our heritage with a thriving diverse economy based on continual preservation and protection of nature.

Generations of families live, work and play in our safe, happy and inclusive Town. We are a Community ‘Built to Last’.
Over time the plan will evolve as the Community grows and implements The Sustainable Path - the plan will grow as the Community grows.

The Sustainable Path Implementation Steering Committee

The Sustainable Path has identified numerous goals, strategies and actions to be undertaken to move The Blue Mountains towards a sustainable future. To get moving on these actions we need residents, organizations, community groups and institutions to work together.
In August 2011, a Steering Committee was formed to oversee and drive implementation of the Sustainable Path. The Committee is comprised of the following individuals:

Kimberly Edwards (Chair), Margaret Wilton-Siegel (Deputy Chair), John Leckie, Duncan McKinlay, Troy Speck, Ben Caesar and  and Kerri MacDonald.
